I was reading a very interesting piece of article from BBC how Helsinki is recognised as the mobile gaming hub of the world link the estimated size is over €120bn.
Coincidently when this news was published, I was in Delhi attending International Engineering and Technology Fair showcasing our immersive technology platform MediSimLab for safe, controlled, and future fit healthcare trainings.
Also, got an opportunity to attend parallel event India Gaming Roadshow happening same time. The enthusiasm, discussions and excitement were sky rocking. I have no doubt that India is poised and has potential to be next epicentre of gaming in coming decade if we play to our strengths transforming education, policy and industry backing.
I am fortunate that over the past one and half years we at Nordicmojo working very closely with Finland and Sweden gaming education providers scaling them in India. The story is really overwhelming how Industry, Academia and Government and most importantly willingness and attitude of people creating opportunities for growth.
Animation Gaming Visual effects and Comics what we call AVGC as the core curriculum is still evolving in India. There are handful of handfuls of school’s /colleges offering degree diploma courses in AVGC sector. The awareness about the career opportunities in this sector is very limited among the students, parents and add academicians. Few of the academicians also urged us to having meeting with engineering students parents convincing and making them aware about gaming education and opportunities. I doubt weather there were similar sessions organised launching AI, Cloud, Blockchain and …. Integrated degree programs.
The good news AVGC task force formed by government of India has already released its draft policy uplifting AVGC sector in India. Once implemented and adopted by state governments will play a pivotal role in pioneering AVGC sector growth prospects in India.
Emergence of Internet reaching to the smallest town in India today there are over 780 million Internet users second biggest to China. Over 400 million play games using mobile phone and no surprise 300 million comes from Tier2+ cities. It is projected that by 2025 the number will reach 650 million mass is coming from Tier2+ cities.
On the lines of how UPI has transformed the digital payments in India using mobile phones. Content consumption using mobile phones is business as usual as on an average Indian spends 7.3 hours daily time browsing content. Research shows that audience specifically from Tier2+ cities is hungry for Local content, Games, puzzles, Music something which they can relate to their culture, locality, and heritage.
Therein lies biggest opportunity for developing games (Engaging content) beyond current gaming apps/platform based on Indian maths, astrology, ancient science, culture, heritage and history. There is plethora of real stories, sites, characters untold and undiscovered evolution of thousands of years. Packaged and produced with quality every century can produce if not less at least 10 versions of the one single game/story. A definite career for historian, storyteller, designer, game developer, marketer, producer and may more a complete ecosystem of developing games. The quality needs to be top notch, flawless and comparable to notch above international standards.
The transformation has already begun with formation of AVGC guideline the need of hour is couple of big Indian brands investing into building creative arts and science institutes (CAS) beyond current engineering and management factories.
To Win the Game creative industry requires different attitude, higher risk appetite and brave decisions to be the change you want to see in the world.
